Szalavitz makes Washington Post

In clear, concise language Ms. Szalavitz's asks the same question that I once heard Stanton Peele ask about tough love, "Why in the world would you want to make someone who obviously already feels bad about himself, feel worse?" And Ms. Szalavitz knows firsthand of what she writes. She bravely admits she is a former teen addict who used drugs to try to feel better about her own self. She mentions Straight. The Post will hold an on-line forum on Monday Jan 30 at 1 PM ET to discuss her article. You can submit your questions now or during the forum. Ms. Szalavitz is the author of Help At Any Cost which will be released next month. article discussion forum

This story is a heartbreaker

11-30-05 There is a divorced man in California who picks up his four year old daughter for visitation. Whenver he does he claims she is covered in brusies. I'm not getting into the whole story but the father eventually went to Jordan Riak who is Executive Director of Parents and Teachers Against Violence in Education. Jordan, who lives in Alamo, California, starting posting pictures showing brusies on the little girl. Now eight state officers gathered at the father's house, removed the child from the man who is trying to expose the abuse, and ordered Jordan to remove all photos of the child because the state is now handling this matter. I saw the pictures before they were removed. Sounds to me like the judge is backing the wrong horse, but that's the way judges sometimes are. Read it for yourself. LINK

Utah's Majestic Ranch under fire

A watchdog group looking at allegations from former staff members at Utah's Majestic Ranch that claim "abusive restraint practices, with students thrown to the ground and hog-tied, their faces shoved in snow or manure," claims the state's investigation of the camp is "half-baked." The camp treats kids aged 7 - 14 for behavioral problems. Salt Lake Tribune - Utah

Utah state senators try to regulate teen help industry

theSTRAIGHTS: The cat's out of the bag; the St. Pete Times is end-runned.

For 17 years the St. Pete Times under Eugene Patterson reported on the horrors of Straight, Inc. in his neighborhood; but he's gone and Paul Tash and Andy Barnes won't touch it.

From 1964 - 1968 Eugene Patterson was vice chairman of the US Civil Rights Commission. Dr. Arnold Trebach was chief of the Office of Civil Rights for the US Justice Department in those days. That's why men like them are so abhorent to the practices of Straight, Inc. Now, despite all the attempts of Paul Tash and Andy Barnes to squelch the real story on Melville's favorite son, it just made a major leap into local journalism anyway. We tried to warn Ambassador Sembler and his accomplices that it was bad news the day Lee Drury De Cesare showed up at Father Cassian's zoning hearing (her husband used to be the mayor of Madeira Beach for goodness sake). If they didn't want to hear it, then why didn't they just leave well enough alone and keep themselves out of the spotlight. Read now Madeira Beach Mayberry Machiavellis Don't Know Nothing 'bout History, Jography, Readin', Writin', or Filin' for 'Lection by the First Lady of Pinellas County Lee Drury De Cesare. And also stop by her blog on The Sphinx Crist. It's really worth the trip.
